Corey's Progressive Music Classes
African Drumming (for adults): Saturday 11am-12pm
Instructor: Colmey
This class is for adults only, and focuses on indigenous drumming styles of West Africa. Concepts covered include all the basics of hand drumming including tone, bass, slap and muffle strokes, instruction on various rhythms of the Ewe people, ensemble playing, call and response, improvisation, the role of rhythms in African societies, and introduction to other percussive instruments including the bell, shaker, karimba. Drums are provided for in class use. Gary’s Music provides student discounted drums to those that are interested in owning their own drum. Ages 18 & up.
Price: $150 per 8 week session. Class is 1.0 hours long and meets once a week.
Intro to Recording: Wednesday 5:15-6:15pm

Let's face it. Musicians love to record their music. But you need to understand the basics of how sound works, and how to capture it with a microphone and computer. In this class, we will cover how to record your own audio and input it into your computer. We will then discuss basic properties of recording, mixing, effects, mastering, transferring to a CD, and conversion to other file formats such as mp3, wav, wma, and so on.
Students may get the possibility to assist with a live recording session in a studio.
Price: $150 per 8 week session. Class is 1.0 hours long and meets once a week.
Acoustic Roots Music Ensemble : Monday 6:00-7:00pm
Instructor: Deschavio
This course is perfect for those who love acoustic folk, bluegrass, americana, reggae and swing. Instructor Jerry Deschavio, bassist/vocalist for the popular groups "Rusty Doves" and "The High Steppers" will instruct students in the art of playing acoustic music in all shapes and sizes. Special guest artists will come by to sit in, perform for the class, and help students along.
Great for guitar players, bassists, saxophone, flautists, clarintetists, strings, piano, vocalists, banjo, percussionists and more.
Price: $150 per 8 week session. Class is 1.0 hours long and meets once a week.
Rock Ensemble: Tuesday 7-8:30pm
Instructor: Colmey
This popular ensemble focuses on playing in a rock band. Slots are open to ALL instrumentalists. Concepts covered include learning to perform in various styles of rock music such as classic rock, modern rock, punk, funk, blues and more. Students will also learn how to understand their role in a group situation. Each band will have an opportunity to write original material. At the conclusion of this course, students may get the chance to perform live at a venue in front of an audience, or get studio recording time. Students must own their own instrument. Equipment such as amplifiers, drums, microphones and PA system is provided for in class use.
Equipment for all instrumentalists is available at a discount to registered students of the class through Gary’s Music.
If classes are overpopulated, another section will open up OR students will have to audition.
Price: $200 per 8 week session. Class is 1.5 hours long and meets once a week.
Music Theory: Thursday 5:30-6:30pm
Instructor: Ossowski
Musicians need to be able to communicate themselves to other musicians, so theory is a must. Our teachers all have extensive background in music theory, and feel that is important for two reasons. First, all colleges require it at some level. Some colleges won't even let you in without a minimal understanding of theory. Second, if you are a musician, and you want to know what it is you're playing, or if you want to be able to write down your music, than you should take this course.
This course will get you on track to becoming a better musician. PERIOD!
Price: $120 per 8 week session. Class is 1.0 hours long and meets once a week.

Guitar Lab : Thursdays 6:45-7:45pm

This popular course is open to both the absolute beginner, and those who have been playing a while, but need to be refreshed on the basics of guitar playing. We will cover tuning, proper technique, strumming patterns, scales, chord patterns, and more. We will also learn popular songs, and play as a group.

Songwriter's Workshop : Wednesday 6:30-7:30pm

Are you a musician with some ideas for your own original songs? Do you want help with putting your ideas together? Do you want to be in a class with other musicians who are in your same situation? Would you like help forming a band to rehearse and perform your ideas? Would you eventually like to go into a recording studio to record your music?
Well, this class is for you. Think of it as a weekly Songwriter's group meeting where you bring your ideas, riffs, concepts and put them on the table for all to see and hear. We will work as a class trying to put it all together, and make your ideas coherent.
Price: $120 per 8 week session. Class is 1.0 hours long and meets once a week.
Advanced Recording Techniques: Wednesday 7:30 - 8:30

This course is the second part to Intro to Recording and will study the concepts of recording more deeply. The Advanced Recording Techniques course covers anything from audio, sound, miking techniques to gear, microphones, monitors, studio setup and software and plugins.
We will go beyond the basics and look at different parts of the recording process such as: Audio (phase, frequency response, decibels etc), Recording Instruments, Recording Techniques, Producing basics, Stand-alone workstations, Computer-based and hard disk recording, Setups, Equipment, Loop-based recording, Sample Recording, Surround sound 5.1, MP3, MIDI, Synthesis, Software synths and more. Students may get the possibility to assist with a live recording session in a studio.
Advanced Rock Ensemble: Monday 7-8:30pm
Instructor: Colmey/Aderman/Ossowski
This ensemble is for the more advanced musicians. You should take this class if you've already been playing for a while, and are looking for another outlet to improve your skills. We will cover a multitude of concepts in this course, such as:
Expression, Originality, Groove, Dynamics, Odd Time Signatures, Gig Etiquette, and more.
